Grunau Baby is een serie Duitse high-wing sport- en trainingsvliegtuigen met één stoel. Het zweefvliegtuig is ontwikkeld door Edmund Schneider, maar veel fabrieken in Duitsland en, onder licentie, in het buitenland, waaronder Schneider, Nord Aviation en Elliots of Newbury, waren verantwoordelijk voor de productie. De prototypevlucht vond plaats in 1931 en de serieproductie begon in hetzelfde jaar. Ongeveer 6.000 exemplaren van dit vliegtuig werden tijdens zijn koers gemaakt, waardoor het het meest geproduceerde zweefvliegtuig in de geschiedenis van de luchtvaart is!
De Grunau Baby is ontwikkeld als een verkleinde versie van een ander succesvol Duits zweefvliegtuig: de Schneider ESG31. Het nieuwe zweefvliegtuig kreeg aanzienlijk gewijzigde vleugels, een verstevigde structuur en een gewijzigde cockpit. Het was ook heel eenvoudig van ontwerp en bestand tegen landingen op moeilijk terrein. Tijdens de serieproductie werden verschillende ontwikkelingsversies gemaakt, waaronder: Baby II of Baby IIb (de basisschoolzweefvliegtuig in Duitsland in de jaren dertig).
